Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "From renowned Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf comes this intriguing, mildew resistant form of our elegant native. The flowers open a deep blue with white eyes and take on purplish shades during the heat of midday, then regain their original indigo coloring in the evening. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds and their spicy vanilla-clove perfume is perfectly enchanting in bouquets. Grow in average soil that doesn't dry out." from White Flower Farm. " 'Blue Paradise' is an erect, herbaceous perennial with lance-shaped, toothed, mid-green leaves and upright trusses of violet flowers with purple eyes from summer to early autumn." from Shoot. "Flowers open pale blue, and darken to a deep violet blue then get red violet edges as they age. The color changes with the light, looking more blue or more purple depending on the time of day. Phlox paniculata thrives in organic, moist to moderately dry in sun to light shade. Tolerant of drought once established. Give good air circulation and keep well watered to reduce growth of powdery mildew. Benefits from occasional fertilization. Deadhead to prolong blooming season. Needs full sun to be happiest. Plants in shade will have smaller flowers and weaker stems. Locating them for good air circulation and consistent soil moisture will be most helpful for powdery mildew control." from North Creek Nurseries. Video from YouTube of this plant in flower. Available from Shoot in the UK with White Flower Farm and North Creek Nurseries in America - "Founded in 1988 by Dale Hendricks and Steve Castorani, North Creek is a propagation nursery that supplies starter plugs to wholesale and retail nurseries. We have a large selection of perennials, grasses and ferns with an emphasis on new varieties and Eastern North American natives and their cultivars. North Creek also produces many native plants in larger Landscape Plugs™ that are used in landscape installation, restoration projects and by highway departments, municipalities and conservation societies." |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach. With a view to easing the task of selection here are lists The standard potting and seed-soil recipes from The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D.
