Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. " 'Red Dragon' is a vigorous, spreading perennial with lance-shaped, purplish-green leaves with a bold central splash of purple bordered by a silver chevron marking, and rounded clusters of tiny white flowers in late summer and autumn. Grow in moist soil in sun or part-shade. Dense groundcover, spreading less quickly than the species. Cut back in autumn." from Royal Horticultural Society. "Superb foliage, which varies in colour, but is mainly maroon with dark burgundy, heart-shaped centres surrounded by a minty-green chevron. The stems are bright red. To help ensure that this plant survives the winter, we advise planting 1-2 inches below the soil surface." from Kernock Park Plants. - "Kernock Park Plants is based in Cornwall, UK and deliver young plants to hundreds of customers within the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. We propagate plants in cells or small pots (liners) for wholesale growers to grow-on into finished pots and liners ready for retail. Instaplant - Instant Carpet Bedding - Your ideas can be transformed into living displays, designed using computer technology and planted from our extensive range of carpet bedding. InstaPlant makes light work of a previously labour intensive task. The planting stage takes place at the nursery, rather than directly into the bed. Installation is easy, on delivery the customer simply slides pre-rooted tiles of plants out of their trays onto a pre-prepared bed following a set plan. This means the bed instantly becomes a colourful work of art within hours." "A beautiful foliage perennial. Pointy heart-shaped leaves are medium green with a silvery V-shaped marking, and a bronze centre. Plants are mounding, bearing sprays of tiny white flowers in late summer. An excellent foliage plant in the border, and especially good in tubs or mixed containers. The gorgeous bronze to plum shades of the leaves blends well with nearly anything! In cold winter climates this plant is well worth growing as a foliage accent, treating it as an annual or wintering indoors in pots" from Heritage Perennials. "We have grown this now for several years and it has proved a real feature as well as perfectly hardy. Try and give it as much light as possible to get the best leaf colour." from The Beth Chatto Gardens. Perennial of the month - December 2000 of University of Vermont Extension. Available from The Beth Chatto Gardens and Burncoose Nurseries in the UK with Lazy S'S Farm Nursery in America. |

The black label in the middle is the Persicaria label, which is above the persicaria foliage, which may only be 20 inches (50 cms) high. Plants in front must have grown higher than this Persicaria and obstructed the view of its flowers. |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach. With a view to easing the task of selection here are lists The standard potting and seed-soil recipes from The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D.
