Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Crambe cordifolia is a species of herbaceous perennial plant in the family Brassicaceae, native to the Caucasus. It is related to the cabbage; the leaves emit a distinctive cabbagy odour when bruised. The kidney-shaped dark green leaves die down in mid- to late summer. It is widely cultivated in gardens for its foliage and spectacular multi-branched inflorescences of many small, white, cruciform (cross-shaped) flowers, reaching up to 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) high and appearing in early summer." from Wikipedia. "Crambe are robust annuals and perennials with large, simple or divided leaves and racemes or large panicles of small, fragrant white flowers Crambe cordifolia is an herbaceous perennial to 1.8m in height, with bold, dark green, lobed leaves to 30cm in width, and branched sprays of small, scented white flowers. Ideally grow in a deep, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun although it will tolerate poor soil and partial shade. Provide shelter from strong winds. Cut down to ground level in autum." from Royal Horticultural Society. "Billowing clouds of tiny, white flowers float above huge rosettes of deeply cut dark green leaves in June and July. A favourite plant of Edwardian garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, this perennial looks magnificent at the back of a sunny border or as part of a cottage garden scheme. The tiny flowers, attractive to bees, are a perfect foil for large-flowered plants. The leaves smell strongly of cabbage and the plant needs space to spread out. Cut back the plant to ground level in autumn and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant in spring." from Crocus. "Our Crambe was purchased from Crocus mail order fifteen months ago. Planted in Spring in a position that is very free draining, the plant clearly did take a good hold producing the large green leaves which the slugs unfortunately seem quite fond of. " from Aberdeen Gardening - "I am Alistair and along with my wife Myra have been gardening in Aberdeen for forty years. I started this website to profile the plants which we have grown in this part of the country. Living in what some see as the frozen north I take pleasure in showing what can be achieved. (Go to my A to Z of our plants) clicking on the plant picture of your choice will take you to where I describe how this plant performed in our garden. Also if you click on the link (Our Garden) you will see a full size picture slideshow of our front and back garden." "Being deep rooted, it is very drought tolerant, but plants do not move once established so it is vital to pick the right spot first time. Use it at the back of a big border where it is a good foil for other flowers, or grow alone as a specimen plant." from BBC. Available from Crocus in the UK with Big Dipper Farm in America and Nutshell Perennial Nursery & Plant Farm in Australia. |

Crambe cordifolia label is in middle between the Pampas grass on the left and the brown tall plant on the right from Mixed Borders at RHS Wisley. The label and its plant might be difficult to see. |
||||
Autumn Form from Mixed Borders at RHS Wisley. Since I cannot even see the Crambe cordifoilia label at the back, if the Crambe cordifolia plants are there then I cannot identify them with the naked eye. It may suggest that the plants that grew were lower than the plants in front of them. |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach.
