Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. Have not so far located any botanical details about this plant. I sincerely believe that this plant requires the nutrients from a banana in each spring/summer month - each banana fruit or "finger" is approximately 75% water and 25% dry matter; the dry matter contains potassium. The potassium and the water are essential nutrients for plant growth. I trust that this banana would reduce this plant's stress levels at being on the verge of extinction - since it may be the last group in cultivation here in the Mixed Borders of Wisley Garden. However, I do not think that the staff at Wisley are currently providing this unique banana service, but at least they have provided support frames for these elderly plants, who are held together by brown twine. Between the 4th March and 25th April 2013, the following plants may have gone on walkabout from these Mixed Borders:-
since my failing eyesight failed to see them. Sadened by this possibility, I am hoping that the next visitor to this page - scheduled for about 16:14 on 11th August 2019 - may still be able to see this plant in the Mixed Border and might even be able to buy it. Available from --- in the UK with --- in America.

On investigation, I have concluded that the phlox labelled as 'Nesperis' in the garden is in fact: Phlox x arendsii 'Hesperis' . A search on the internet will generate a great deal of information on this cultivar. I hope this information is helpful. Yours sincerely,
Tony Dickerson Horticultural Advisor The RHS and its subsidiaries would like to keep in touch with you with special offers relating to membership, shows, products, services and fundraising. We'll never sell your data to any third party and all emails will include an unsubscribe option. If you would prefer we don't keep in touch, please email membership@rhs.org.uk
Information and flower photo on Phlox x arendsii 'Hesperis' is available from Missouri Botanical Garden in America. It is available from Hillview Hardy Plants in the UK, who also display a photo of the flower on their website page. Those flower photos look very similar to the ones that I took in August 2013. |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach.
