Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Geranium can be annuals, biennials and perennials, herbaceous or evergreen, with rounded, usually palmately lobed or divided leaves, and lax inflorescences of rounded, 5-petalled flowers. Geranium psilostemon is an herbaceous perennial forming a large clump of lobed leaves, tinted red in autumn. Flowers 4cm in width, magenta-crimson with black centres, on upright stems to 1.2m. Grow in any, moderately fertile soil apart from waterlogged soils. Full sun or partial shade is best but shade is tolerated. Quite a tall species so may need support to prevent it flopping. " from Royal Horticultural Society. "For a big, muscular plant that can grow to nearly 1m (3ft) high and wide, with masses of flowers that are, well, screaming magenta, it never overwhelms. The dark eye in each flower tones down the effect and the flowers themselves are scattered over its lush green foliage. This geranium forms a nice neat hemisphere of growth, steadily expanding until it flowers in mid-June. Usefully, this is later than most of the pink-flowered cranesbills and, while it does not flower again in September, it has a good long season, often until August. Geranium psilostemon has several advantages over the "common" pink cranesbills that are variants of Geranium x oxonianum. It is less likely to collapse in an untidy heap after flowering and, while large, does not spread as vigorously and does not need a big border. And it does not scatter aggressive little seedlings all over the place like Geranium 'Claridge Druce'. Geranium psilostemon has been crossed with Geranium endressii and the results are very garden-worthy, but they do need space. 'Patricia' and 'Ivan' are the hybrids most widely seen; not as dark or strong a colour as Geranium psilostemon but possibly longer flowering. They have the low but spreading habit of Geranium endressii - good if you want to cover nearly a square metre of ground, but not if you have only a small border. Geranium psilostemon benefits from fertile, moist well-drained soil. It will grow in poor soils, but will not become so large and long-flowering. At British latitudes it thrives in both full sun and light shade. This is one of the few herbaceous perennials that can be grown in rough grass; the late Christopher Lloyd did so successfully at Great Dixter. It can also be planted alongside native vegetation in light shade, for example along hedge bottoms. After a number of years, plants can be divided during winter. Propagation is also possible from seed but because the seed is shot out from the capsule by a spring mechanism it is easily lost. Given that it usually stays tidy after flowering, few gardeners will see the need to support it with pea sticks and/or cut it back after flowering, as they would with other cranesbills. Cutting back and composting the dead foliage in autumn is the only upkeep it needs. Like nearly all cultivated members of the geranium genus, it is very long-lived." from The Telegraph.
Available from Crocus and Toby Buckland Nurseries in the UK . |

Companions |
"Geranium psilostemon works well with pale blues (try Veronica longifolia) and the yellow-greens that occur in later-flowering euphorbias such as Euphorbia schillingii. These colours are truly complementary; each has a vibrancy in the presence of the other that it lacks alone. Geranium pratense 'Mrs Kendall Clark' and Geranium himalayense 'Irish Blue' are pale enough to be good companions - most other blues are too dark to be effective. With its bulky, slightly formless shape, this is a plant that benefits from companions with more structure. Not only will the pale blue-violet of most forms of Veronicastrum virginicum look good with the geranium, but its strong vertical thrust makes an effective contrast." from The Telegraph. |

Seed production system:- The top 2 flowers have just deceased leaving the start of the seed pod. The bottom right flower head has created the seed pod system. The bottom left seed pod has elevated its seeds which are almost ready for dispersal. Photo from Chris Garnons-Williams on 29 July 2013. |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach. With a view to easing the task of selection here are lists The standard potting and seed-soil recipes from The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D.
