Comment |
Clump-forming Form. Pruning Group 14. "Clump forming plant with erect stems and deeply lobed, dark green leaves. Dense racemes of funnel-shaped, wine-red flowers. june to August. Ht.80cm.(2.5ft.). Grow in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Good for sunny borders." from Classic Roses. "Silky, wine red cups, stacked up spires to 75cm.(2'6"). If you love traditional Hollyhocks, but are disheartened by attacks of rust disease and untidy heaps of foliage - then grow this instead. Sidalceas look like miniature Hollyhocks, but are not and avoid all those problems. Much healthier, hardier and heartwarming. More dainty than real Hollyhocks and definitely friendlier to a small garden. Sun to 1/2 shade. Frost hardy." from Country Farm Perennials - "Country Farm Perennials has been operating a nursery in the small village of Nayook for over 20 years, specialising in rare and drought tolerant perennial plants. The love of garden plants and garden design led us to become a licensed travel agency more than 12 years ago, since when we have been designing and conducting Australian and Overseas Gourmet Garden Holidays." "The prairie mallow 'Sidalcea malviflora' is native to the Western United States, growing in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Plant Hardiness Zones 5 to 9. While native plants produce pale purple-pink blooms, hybrid varieties may produce blooms in shades of white, pink, red and violet. Typically growing to heights of 2 to 4 feet, this plant is often referred to as miniature hollyhock, California checkerbloom or false mallow. Although it occurs naturally in the high plains, it can be cultivated in sunny locations with well-drained soil." from Home Guides of San Francisco Chronicle. See photos of this and other Sidalceas from Stewart Robert Hinsley. Available from Classic Roses and Barnsdale Gardens in the UK with Country Farm Perennials in Australia and Stauden-Stade in Germany. Barnsdale Gardens - "This online Shop is an opportunity to buy choice and unusual plants propagated from Geoff Hamilton's Barnsdale Gardens. Take the garden tour and see for yourself the amazing range of ideas in our 39 individually designed and well-stocked gardens. Each one offers practical concepts that you can use at home as well as botanically labelled plants, ideal for making notes of the ones you really like before linking through to make direct online purchases at our nursery shop. |

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach.
