Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "The plant has been extensively cultivated as a forage crop, an ornamental, a bee plant and as green manure. In 1891, goat's rue was introduced to Cache County, Utah, for use as a forage crop. It escaped cultivation and is now a weed and agricultural pest, though it is still confined to that county. As a result, it has been placed on the Federal Noxious Weed List in the United States. It was collected in Colorado, Connecticut and New York prior to the 1930s, and in Maine and Pennsylvania in the 1960s, but no more collections have been made in these areas since and the populations are presumed to have died out. It has also been found in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and New Zealand." from Wikipedia. "A few reports exist, none of them in Britain, of toxicity to mammals, though the plant is often fed to cows and goats in order to increase their milk yield. Galega officinalis is a PERENNIAL growing to 1.2 m (4ft) by 0.8 m (2ft 7in) at a fast rate. It is hardy to zone 4. It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen in August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. It can fix Nitrogen." from Plants for a Future. "Goat's rue is an informal plant that looks best scrambling amongst low branches of shrubs, which support the handsome foliage and allow the stems of lavender mini-sweet pea flowers to space themselves out and make a good display. If left unsupported plants may, in rich soil, trail over the ground or form untidy hillocks, and are best supported with twiggy pea sticks to raise them up off the ground. In good growing conditions plants self seed, so deadhead in borders. In wild gardens self-sown seedlings produce a delightful natural effect." from Gardeners World. Video of this plant on YouTube. Available from Gardeners World in the UK. Seeds are available from Sarah Raven and Chiltern Seeds. |
