"Baboon Root has stiff hairy leaves and dense spikes of funnel-shaped flowers, many of them sweetly scented, and all of them brilliantly coloured. Being tender, their culture in the UK should only be attempted out of doors in the warmest parts of the country. (Plant against South-facing House Wall in Southern England where temperatures do not go below -5 degrees Centigrade. Set 6 inches (15 cms) deep in average and sandy soils, a little shallower in heavy clay - put 2 inches (5 cms) of sand surrounding bulb to prevent rotting - soils, 6 inches (15 cms) apart. Mulch with 3 inches (7.5 cms) of organic compost to conserve moisture in the summer, remove mulch during autumn and winter. - from R.V. Roger).
For Indoor Culture they should be potted in October or November in well-drained pots. Over the drainage hole of each pot place an inverted crock, next some rough coca-nut fibre, then a layer of thoroughly decayed cow manure, and over that a compost consisting of turfy loam, peat, and leaf-mould in equal quantities and a plentiul supply of silver sand. A 5-inch (12.5 cm) pot is the best size to use and will accomodate 6 corms. A winter temperature of from 40-50F (4-10C) suits them in the greenhouse.Do not water until growth commences and keep the plants near the glass until they are ready to transfer to the conservatory. The plants flower in May and June, and as soon as the foliage commences to die all watering must cease. "Being native to the Mediterrranean area, the plants are found in rocky places where there is an accumulation of soil. They need protection below 25 F (-4C). Biarum tubers are found just below the surface of the soil. The spathes, which appear before the leaves, are distinctive in that they are stemless and are produced at or just below ground level. The flowers on the spadix are maroon or dark purple. The majority of the species are unpleasant to smell.
Culture - They should be grown in moderately good soil in areas with perect drainage and full sun. Little or no moisture is needed during the summer months, winter moisture is essential. The plants must be allowed to be warm and dry during the summer for them to flower well. TAhey should be planted with the tubers just below the surface of the soil - a depth of about 2 inches (5 cms) is sufficient. Spacing can be 4-6 inches (10-15 cms) apart.Once established they should go undisturbed. Feeding is not necessary. If frost is likely, then mulch with 3 inches (7.5 cm) of fallen leaves during the winter before removing that mulch in April.
Propagation - The tubers can be lifted and divided, which is best done in the summer while the plants are dormant.
These small plants should be considered only for a rock garden, and then planted close to the path so they can be appreciated. They do not make suitable container plants, and, while they can be grown in a warm, sunny border, they look their best in locations that duplicate their natural habitat - rocky, sandy locations in full sun." from Bulbs Voloume I, A-H by John E. "Soils vary enormously in characteristics, but the size of the particles that make up a soil defines its gardening characteristics: Clay: less than 0.002mm Silt: 0.002-0.05mm Sand: 0.05-2mm Stones: bigger than 2mm in size Chalky soils also contain calcium carbonate or lime The dominating particle size gives soil its characteristics and because the tiny clay particles have a huge surface area for a given volume of clay they dominate the other particles: Clay soils have over 25 percent clay. Also known as heavy soils, these are potentially fertile as they hold nutrients bound to the clay minerals in the soil. But they also hold a high proportion of water due to the capillary attraction of the tiny spaces between the numerous clay particles. They drain slowly and take longer to warm up in spring than sandy soils. Clay soils are easily compacted when trodden on while wet and they bake hard in summer, often cracking noticeably. Sandy soils have high proportion of sand and little clay. Also known as light soils, these soils drain quickly after rain or watering, are easy to cultivate and work. They warm up more quickly in spring than clay soils. But on the downside, they dry out quickly and are low in plant nutrients, which are quickly washed out by rain. Sandy soils are often very acidic. Silt soils, comprised mainly of intermediate sized particles, are fertile, fairly well drained and hold more moisture than sandy soils, but are easily compacted Loams are comprised of a mixture of clay, sand and silt that avoid the extremes of clay or sandy soils and are fertile, well-drained and easily worked. They can be clay-loam or sandy-loam depending on their predominant composition and cultivation characteristics. Peat soils are mainly organic matter and are usually very fertile and hold much moisture. They are seldom found in gardens. Chalky or lime-rich soils may be light or heavy but are largely made up of calcium carbonate and are very alkaline." from Royal Horticultural Society .

argyranthemumflocmadeirasantana1 Disc - Many daisies are easy to grow and very free-flowering. The typical colour contrast between the disc and the surrounding rays creates a lively effect (Argyranthemum 'Maderia Santana'). Many daisies are excellent cut flowers.

Floret - helianthusfloannuus1 Floret is a small or reduced flower, especially 1 of a cluster in a composite flower - such as the florets of a sunflower (The very small flowers in a ring inside the yellow petals of Helianthus annuus). It is also any of the tight, branched clusters of flower buds that together form a head of cauliflower or broccoli.

"Understanding Fern Needs
Ferns have the same basic growing requirements as other plants and will thrive when these are met. There is nothing mysterious about the requirements - they are not something known only to people with green thumbs - but the best gardeners are those who understand plant requirements and are careful about satisfying them.
What, then, does a fern need?

All plants need water. Water in the soil prevents roots from drying, and all mineral nutrients taken up by the roots must be dissolved in the soil water. Besides water in the soil, most plants need water in the air. Adequate humidity keeps the plant from drying out. Leaves need water for photosynthesis and to keep from wilting.
All green plants need light to manufacture food (sugars) by photosynthesis. Some plants need more light than others, and some can flourish in sun or shade. Most ferns, however, prefer some amount of shade.
For photosynthesis, plants require carbon dioxide, a gas that is exhaled by animals as waste. Carbon dioxide diffuses into plants through tiny pores, called stomata, that abound on the lower surface of the leaves. In the leaf, carbon dioxide is combined with the hydrogen from water to form carbohydrates, the plant's food. This process takes place only in the presence of light and chlorophyll, a green pigment found in plant cells. To enhance growth, some commercial growers increase the carbon dioxide level in their greenhouses to 600ppm (parts per million), or twice the amount typically found in the air.
Plants need oxygen. The green plants of a plant do not require much oxygen from the air because plants produce more oxygen by photosynthesis than they use. The excess oxygen liberated from the plants is used by all animals, including humans. What do plants do with oxygen? They use it just as we do, to release the energy stored in food. We use energy to move about, to talk, to grow, to think - in fact, for all our life processes. Although plants don't talk or move much, they do grow and metabolize and must carry on all their life processes using oxygen to release the stored energy in their food.
Roots need air all the time. They get it from the air spaces between the soil particles. Overwatering displaces the air between soil particles with water, thereby removing the oxygen needed by the roots. This reduces the root's ability to absorb mineral nutrients and can foster root-rot.
Plants need minerals to grow properly. The minerals are mined from the soil by the plant's root system. If a certain mineral is missing, such as calcium needed for developing cell walls, then the plant will be stunted, discoloured, or deformed.
Some plants tolerate a wide range of temperatures, whereas others are fussy. If the temperature is too high or low, the machinery of the plant will not operate satisfactorily or will cease entirely.

The basic needs of plants are not hard to supply, but growing success depends on attending to these needs with care and exactitude. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to a discussion of these requirements, with the exception of mineral needs, which are discussed in Chapter 5."
